Below are two examples of recent book design projects that were designed using MS Word, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator, and then self-published on Amazon.com. Lucy’s Lunch is a collection of cut-out lunch box notes for kids. See further down the page for the book, Into the Amazon in Search of Truth, a personal memoir with text and photos.
Lucy’s Lunch: A Year of Lunch Box Art
The cover for Lucy’s Lunch has several elements working together creating a harmonious composition. Sample images from the book show the approximate scale of the notes, with a child’s lunch box and school desktop in the background. The contrasting typefaces are both handwritten, and reflect the personal touch of each unique note. The large chalkboard-style typeface references younger children and school.
Into the Amazon in Search of Truth
Into the Amazon in Search of Truth is a personal account of a transformative journey I took into the Peruvian Amazon. I designed the cover and interior layout, and also self-published the book for sale on Amazon.com as a paperback book, and ebook.
The cover design reflects the eye-opening experiences I encountered while in the Peruvian Amazon. The central eye image was taken from an original 4×4′ painting I did of my own eye in 2007, and can be seen “burning through layers of illusion,” symbolized by the map layers. In the background, the native Shipibo textile pattern reflects the time I spent living within a local native community near Pucallpa, Peru.
